Paragould firefighters assisted an unidentified male and female from a burning home at 501 Walnut Road on Thursday; there were no apparent injuries, Chief Kevin Lang said.

Emerging from a bedroom window, the pair, dressed only in sleepwear, looked dazed as they took shelter inside a fire department vehicle from the cold air and a light scattering of sleet that had begun to fall.

“I don’t know [what happened],” the woman said, opening her phone and apparently dialing the homeowner to tell them the house was on fire. “I just woke up and the house was filled with smoke.”

Lang said a neighbor alerted emergency services to the fire, which appeared to have originated in the kitchen close to the main entrance.
